In December, another Amtrak derailment in Washington state caused the deaths of three passengers, with 62 injured.

Two members of the passenger train brigade were killed and 116 people were injured.

"There were eight crew members and approximately 139 passengers, with injuries reported". It happened around 2:30 in the morning, so numerous passengers were sleeping, including Erin Witman, who spoke to MSNBC.

More than 70 people were injured and taken to hospitals when the Amtrak train collided with a CSX freight train near Cayce on Sunday morning.

CSX in its own statement offered condolences to the families of the two Amtrak employees who were killed in the crash. Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said 54-year-old engineer Michael Kempf and 32-year-old conductor Michael Sella were killed in the collision. Kemp was from Savannah, Georgia.

Sumwalt said in a press conference that the rail switch at the location of the crash was "lined and locked" to direct the rails onto the side track where the CSX train was resting.

"It appears that Amtrak was on the wrong track", added McMaster.

"Our information - and this is subject to correction - is that this was not the main (train) line", McMaster said. "That's subject to verification". This is the second major crash involving their trains in less than a week. However, the investigation is ongoing.

"The Federal Railroad Administration Investigative team is on site to support to the National Transportation Safety Board's investigation", the U.S. Department of Transportation said in a statement. The southbound Amtrak train collided with a northbound CSX freight train, which was stationary, causing the Amtrak train to derail.

Amtrak President and Chief Executive Richard Anderson told reporters Sunday that CSX was responsible for the wreck because of the locked switch. Still others are being evaluated for serious conditions. He could not validate if any one of the personal injuries were actually life-threatening. Most of those were minor injuries.

The rest had been treated and released, Brown said. According to spokeswoman Jennifer Wilson, two patients were admitted.

Five thousand gallons of fuel also spilled in the collision.
