Coordination committee sacks Farooq Sattar as MQM-P convener

The committee has agreed to challenge power of Sattar to issue party tickets for Senate elections

Muttahida Qaumi Movement Pakistan (MQMP) chief Dr Farooq Sattar has said on Sunday that a conspiracy that was hatched against him has been exposed.

However, it appears that Dr Sattar was not impressed with the decision they personally communicated to him in the evening as he insisted on picking altogether new faces for March 3 Senate elections. His aides had established that it was not the matter of Senate elections but it was the issue of taking over the party, he added.

The party crisis over distribution of Senate tickets continued on a fifth consecutive day with the two sides - one led by Dr Sattar and the other by Amir Khan - getting ready for a final showdown.

The rift ostensibly took place between the party leaders and the convener on issuing tickets for Senate elections.

"The Rabita Committee has chose to remove Dr Farooq Sattar as the party's convener", senior party leader Kanwar Naveed Jameel had announced in a press conference on Sunday evening. He said Dr Sattar agreed to visit the Bahadurabad office if the letter was withdrawn.

In reaction to deputy conveners' action, Dr Sattar claimed that he was not de-seated but every loyal worker of the political party was symbolically de-seated today.

Citing his own example, he said he himself was sacked as a coordination committee member for six times in the past and Farooq Sattar's reelection as a convener depended on his performance.

"The registration of a party as organized as the MQM was cancelled by the ECP only due to the negligence of Dr Farooq Sattar". He said this right was the sole privilege of the Rabita Committee, which was transferring it to deputy-convener Siddiqui.

Irked by the developments, Dr Sattar, who had on Thursday promised to go to the Bahadurabad headquarters at 6pm on Friday to hold a meeting there to hammer out differences, held consultations with party MNAs and MPAs at his house till late in the night and informed them about the prevailing situation.

Mr Tessori was among many candidates whose Senate nomination form was filed by the Dr Sattar-led group.

He termed the Rabita Committee decision tantamount to expelling all the party workers from the MQM-P.

"I have offered my resignation [from the provincial assembly] as a member of intermediary committee to bring the two groups on negotiation table", he said.
