Adam Rippon Turns Down NBC Winter Olympics Correspondent Job

Shoma Uno of Japan Adam Rippon of U.S. Yan Han of China and Paul Fentz of Germany

As one of the few openly homosexual athletes to qualify for Team USA, Rippon earned national attention prior to the Olympics when he expressed his anger over Vice President Mike Pence traveling with the team to South Korea for the Opening Ceremony.

Breakout star of the Olympics Adam Rippon, an openly gay figure skater, has been hired as a correspondent by NBC for the remainder of the PyeongChang Games, USA Today reports.

According to Sports Illustrated, Rippon ultimately decided that he would rather remain an Olympian and enjoy his time in Pyeongchang rather than take the NBC position. Rippon became one of the most well-known names of the Olympics with his unapologetic personality and gorgeous skating style.

"It felt worth the 28-year wait, you know?" he said after winning team bronze, per John Paul Brammer of NBC News.

Rippon, who has become well known for his bold personality and fun, outspoken commentary during interviews, helped the US bring home a bronze medal in the team skating competition.

When asked in December what it was like to be a gay athlete, he responded, "It's exactly like being a straight athlete". Kenworthy and Rippon are the first openly gay USA athletes to compete in the Games. "I spoke out for them because right now I have a voice, and I think it's really important for me to use it". Rippon was an alternate for the 2010 Vancouver Games and didn't make the 2014 Sochi team (instead, he ate In-N-Out Burger with fellow 2018 teammate Mirai Nagasu).

In addition to Field and her son, he also has fans in stars like Reese Witherspoon and Britney Spears.
