Autism: Scientists take 'first steps' towards biological test

But the new test could reveal another cause of ASD, according to scientists.

It is nearly 90 percent accurate and could be available to doctors within a year, scientists at the University of Warwick say.

Yet, specialists alert the tests are a long way from getting to be accessible clinically and that more research should be finished.

They found autistic children have damage to the proteins in their blood plasma, caused by sugar and harmful molecules containing oxygen.

In a paper published to the journal Molecular Autism, the team led by Dr Naila Rabbani detailed how it can be detected with a series of blood and urine tests that identify damaged proteins believed to be key to the development of ASD.

Currently, there is no test to identify ASD, which the NHS describes as "a range of similar conditions, including Asperger syndrome, that affect a person's social interaction, communication, interests and behaviour".

Scientists in the United Kingdom have developed a blood and urine test that can detect autism in children.

"Our test is expected to improve the accuracy of ASD diagnosis from 60-70 percent now achieved by experts in neurological disorders to approximately 90 percent accuracy", Naila Rabbani, lead study author and a biologist at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom, told Gizmodo. About 30-35% of cases of ASD are linked to genetic variants, but there is no exact formula for predicting autism.

Facebook's Messenger Kids Arrives on Android
For the kids there's stickers, GIFs and they can attach frames to pictures or send emoji just like usual chat apps. But what it did not mention was that many of those experts received Facebook funding, said the report on Wednesday.

The researchers said the tests could lead ultimately to the earlier detection of the condition, which can be hard to diagnose.

The study was with quite a small group, so further testing will be required to confirm the findings. "This may help us improve the diagnosis of ASD and point the way to new causes of ASD", Rabbani said in a statement.

Researchers still do not completely understand why people develop autism.

This study may give us clues about why autistic people are different but it does not provide a new method for diagnosis. It is far too early for that.

Max Davie from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, who did not work on this study, also questions the validity of the data, pointing out, "The analysis was derived from children whose ages averaged 7-8, so there is no data to indicate that very young children will have the same metabolic pattern and that the results found would be reproducible in infants".

"This study does not disclose to us how successfully this measure can separate amongst autism and other neurodevelopmental or emotional well-being conditions, for example, ADHD and tension".

Researchers in a new study discovered a blood test could determine with as much as 90 percent accuracy whether a child has autism.
