California school shooting plot thwarted, police say

School in Whittier Calif. where a security guard allegedly overheard a disgruntled student threatening to shoot at the school

A 17-year-old who had earlier tangled with an El Camino High School teacher about wearing headphones in class mumbled something after lunch about "shooting up the campus" within three weeks, according to KTLA.

"While these rumors are unsubstantiated, we take them seriously and are working with law enforcement to actively investigate", Steinahuser wrote on the school's website.

"An Oregon high school student was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of disorderly conduct after police say he sent a social media message to a girl at another high school reading, "I am the shooter!"

The student, who was not identified, did not have a weapon on him when officials at the Whittier school confronted him. "I'm just doing my job". 'I said, "Well, you can't say those things on a school campus"'.

Educators School Safety Network says it recorded about 50 threats a day on average since the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where 17 people were killed.

Officers found two AR-15 assault rifles - the same weapon allegedly used by Parkland gunman Nikolas Cruz last week - along with two handguns and 90 high-capacity ammunition magazines.

The teenager, who had an extensive disciplinary history at the school, was arrested on suspicion of making a criminal threat and was in custody, McDonnell said.

He was arrested on multiple charges including: possession of an assault weapon, import of a high-capacity magazine, failure to register a handgun and criminal storage of firearms. Barcenes was booked at Norwalk Sheriff's Station and held on $35,000, police said.

Since the Florida school shooting on February 14, there have been 19 school-related threats in L.A. County that have been reported to the department's Criminal Intelligence Bureau, according to McDonnell.

McDonnell did not name the teen because he is a minor. The weapons "were readily available to him", the sheriff said of the younger suspect. The weapons were found unsecured in the home, meaning any resident - adult or juvenile - had access to them. There was even a handgun in the hallway of the home.

But it said "We regularly review our Emergency plans for each site that includes responses to natural disasters, but also for intruders and threats on campus". "This is our school". "Anytime we can get a chance to prevent something like that happening, we all come away from that very relieved". "This is the one spot where every student should feel safe there", student Fernando Aguilera said.

Marino Chavez, the safety officer for El Camino High School in South Whittier, overheard a student threaten to shoot the school within "the next three weeks" and promptly alerted authorities.
