World''s most sophisticated weather satellite to launch shortly

New weather satellite built in Colorado will launch on Thursday

ULA's current and heritage Atlas and Delta rockets have launched every GOES satellite, first launching in 1975.

GOES-S Satellite will provide a high-definition feed of Western United States along with Alaska which earlier remained isolated from the scanners of other weather satellites. A previous weather satellite, GOES-16, was launched on November 19, 2016 and is now monitoring weather conditions along the eastern seaboard of the country.

National Weather Service Director Louis Uccellini said he's been "blown away" by the impacts GOES-16 has had on weather forecasting.

Rolling out on the eve of liftoff with the GOES-S weather satellite, a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket journeyed 1,800 feet from its vertical assembly hangar to Cape Canaveral's Complex 41 launch pad Wednesday. GOES-S is the second in the series of weather satellites.

On March 1, 2018, a 2-hour year has been reserved for a next-generation GOES-S satellite that will be launched aboard United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket in the geostationary orbit.

So how did we get here? Yes, that shot in the closing minute was certainly the "WTF!" moment of this particular episode. Like most big flourishes on " The Walking Dead " - including Carl's fate - the answer will likely require some waiting.

The GOES-S satellite will take the place of NOAA's current GOES-West spacecraft to monitor the western U.S. Its view will extend all the way to New Zealand, as well.

NASA is proud that the GOES-S satellite can detect hotspots for wildfires. Later this year, after undergoing a full checkout and validation of its six high-tech instruments, the new satellite will move to the GOES-West position and become operational. The U.S. will soon have two of the most advanced weather satellites ever, operating in tandem. Variants of this engine have been in use for five decades - 487 have flown to date - and are still relied upon today to launch the vast majority of operational USA government satellites and exploration spacecraft.

After the satellite is deployed, it will spend about three weeks making its way into geostationary orbit.

Mission operations will be performed by NOAA at the NOAA Satellite Operations Facility in Suitland, Maryland. Development of the advanced satellite program started back in 2005 and will continue through 2036.

ULA had been the go to private contractor for Government space missions, but since 2016 more and more mission have been awarded to rival company SpaceX.
