Perez pushes DREAM Act as Trump's DACA deadline passes

DACA Dreamers Schneiderman

The executive policy, called the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, was enacted by former President Barack Obama in 2012 and revoked by President Donald Trump's administration in September 2017. That essentially muted the March 5 deadline that Trump had set for the program, and Dreamers whose DACA permits expire can still submit applications to renew their protected status.

Immigrant advocates and their allies in Congress want a narrower bill that would protect DACA recipients, possibly combined with limited border enforcement measures, but the administration has balked.

"It's March 5th and the Democrats are nowhere to be found on DACA". Gave them 6 months, they just don't care. "Mexico must do much more on stopping drugs from pouring into the U.S. They have not done what needs to be done". And, a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision has effectively - and perhaps indefinitely - delayed the deadline.

The Trump administration attempted to bypass an appeals court by asking the Supreme Court to hear a case involving DACA after a federal judge ruled in favor of plaintiffs seeking to maintain the program.

"Given this posture, it is critical that DHS ensure that DACA recipients are not deported from the only country they have known".

Hundreds of activists and Dreamers descended on Washington to press lawmakers into action.

Congress had every opportunity to legislate a fix, but the fate of Dreamers has proved too divisive for lawmakers to resolve. The issue could come up again before a March 23 deadline to fund the federal government, but there's no clear path to a solution yet.

"The sad part is, is that both Republicans and Democrats don't disagree on most of the merits of this legislation", she said.

Though he initially told a bipartisan group of legislators in a televised meeting that he would "take the heat" and sign any legislation Congress sent his way, Trump later took numerous potshots at bipartisan legislation, added his own conditions to potential legislation and then blamed Democrats for the standstill.
