Russian Federation offers Syrian opposition fighters safe exit from Eastern Ghouta

Trump and May blame Russia, Syria for E Ghouta suffering

People in eastern Ghouta "are exhausted, they are angry", he said.

A Syrian army colonel has said the besieged Eastern Ghouta region will soon re-enter the "state's embrace", as troops launched an offensive aimed at cutting the rebel-held enclave in two.

We review the key developments in Syria, including a Russian military cargo plane crashing in Syria, Moscow offering rebels in Eastern Ghouta safe exit from the area, and the SDF saying it will redeploy 1,700 fighters from eastern Syria to Afrin. A local insurgent group called it a "scorched earth" campaign.

The chaos deepens on February 22 as the Syrian regime rains rockets and bombs on the enclave.

Russian Federation and Damascus have accused rebels of preventing civilians from leaving eastern Ghouta during daily ceasefires.Rebels have consistently denied the accusation and say people will not leave because they fear the government.

Syria's United Nations representative Bashar al-Jaafari confirms the comparison, saying: "Yes, Eastern Ghouta will become another Aleppo".

Turkey's Foreign Ministry says the country plans to establish camps in nine locations in northern Syria to house people displaced by fighting amid Ankara's offensive against Syrian Kurdish fighters.

"More than 700 fighters from the Syrian government's allied militias took new positions on the Eastern Ghouta fronts", the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

On February 26 the regime carries out more bombings despite the United Nations truce demand.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said on Sunday that the chemical attacks allegations against the Syrian government are part of the Western "dictionary of lies", state news agency SANA reported.

Eastern Ghouta, home to some 400,000 people, has been under a crippling siege and daily bombardment for months.

"Humanitarian aid has been instrumentalized as a weapon of war with siege warfare and denial of life-giving assistance used to compel civilian communities and parties to the conflict alike to surrender or starve", it said. The air and ground assault, supposedly aimed at a few militants in Eastern Ghouta, continued while the convoy moved through rubbled streets.

On March 6 the regime continues heavy air strikes as its forces make headway in the enclave's farmland.

The regime's continued ground and air attacks on Eastern Ghouta, a suburb of Damascus, come despite separate cease-fire initiatives endorsed by Russian Federation and the UN Security Council.

In the latest attempt to end the seven-year war, the foreign ministers of government allies Iran and Russian Federation and rebel backer Turkey are to meet next week in Astana.
