FIFA Approves VAR For World Cup

Germany sides with UK against Russia because of football

In order to help referees make correct decisions at football's biggest spectacle, FIFA has chose to approve the controversial technology in a meeting chaired by FIFA president Gianni Infantino in Bogata.

"It's a decision based on the trials that were carried out in over 1,000 matches in the last two years that provide us with guarantees and concrete facts that VAR definitely helps referees", Infantino said.

A Fifa ruling in Colombia on Friday approved of the decision, after the International Football Association Board reached a unanimous decision to introduce the technology earlier this month.

Infantino said VAR had been shown to reduce the number of refereeing mistakes in matches where it has been used and would help football become "a fairer and more transparent sport".

"Nobody knows exactly how VAR will work".

VAR is not expected to be used in the Premier League next season, while UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin recently revealed it will not be used in next campaign's Champions League.

"We have been working at this for two years with a group of referees and experts", Infantino added.

While Video assistant referee technology (VAR) will make its debut at the World Cup in Russian Federation this summer. India too had put in an official bid to host the U-20 World Cup but lost out to its European counterpart.

It's a drawback which has left many fans and purists frustrated that the flow of a game is interrupted.

"We are not anxious at all, we are here to organise a football tournament, we are here to organise the most important football and social event in the world, so we believe football can bring people together", said Infantino.

"We've looked at the technology to be ready for the World Cup".

"It's good and necessary that there are changes but it's essential that we don't lose the essence of football", added Suarez.

However, FIFA added that they can not "yet" agree to a request from the Iraqi authorities to organize matches in the capital of Baghdad.

Since the invasion of Kuwait in 1990, Iraq has not played full internationals games on home turf.

The ban, covering all but domestic matches, stayed in place after the US-led invasion of 2003 toppled dictator Saddam Hussein.
