Paul Ryan claims he's 'received assurances' that President Trump won't fire Mueller

Two bipartisan Senate bills introduced last summer, when Trump first started criticizing Mueller's probe, would make it harder to fire a special counsel by requiring a judicial review. The president challenged the investigation's existence and suggested political bias on the part of Mr Mueller's investigators.

As head of the Russian Federation investigation, Mueller has become a favorite target of President Donald Trump's Twitter feed.

"In response to media speculation and related questions being posed to the Administration, the White House yet again confirms that the President is not considering or discussing the firing of the Special Counsel, Robert Mueller", he said.

If Mueller is discredited, then whatever he finds out is disqualified in the eyes of Trump's most loyal supporters.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt on Tuesday that the president knows any effort to end Mueller's investigation could be considered an impeachable offense.

On Saturday, Trump's personal lawyer John Dowd urged the Justice Department official overseeing Mueller, Rod Rosenstein, to "bring an end to alleged Russia Collusion investigation manufactured by McCabe's boss James Comey".

"I agree with the president's lawyers that Bob Mueller should be allowed to finish his job". For the most part, however, the G.O.P. caucus stayed quiet-a tacit stamp of approval, perhaps, that shuttering Mueller's probe could be justified.

The records were given as Trump's lawyers negotiate with Mueller's team about the scope and terms of a possible interview with the president.

"He would be wrong, in my view, to try to stop this investigation without cause on the Mueller side", he said.

But White House lawyer Ty Cobb sought late Sunday to tamp down the speculation by saying the president is not contemplating such a move.

Trump can not directly fire Mueller.

Trump may have felt emboldened after Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired former Federal Bureau of Investigation deputy director Andrew McCabe on Friday, something Trump had clamored for out of a belief that McCabe was part of the entrenched, anti-Trump bureaucracy.

Still, some of the White House officials acknowledged that Trump did once flirt with removing Mueller.

"People who have thought well of Donald Trump have usually been mistaken", Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee.

Trump, emboldened by Dowd's statements in the press, unleashed a torrent of abuse at McCabe, arguing that the entire Russian Federation investigation was "based on fraudulent activities and a Fake Dossier paid for by Crooked Hillary and the DNC"; claiming that McCabe "never took notes when he was with me" ("can we call them Fake Memos?"); and suggesting that McCabe's wife's Democratic political connections had influenced the probe.

Mr Trump was referring to a dossier of unfavourable research funded by the Democratic Party and Hillary Clinton's campaign.

Likely contributing to Trump's sense of frustration, The New York Times reported last week that Mueller had subpoenaed the Trump Organization for Russia-related documents.

"I think it was an excellent appointment", McConnell said of Mueller. Trump wrote on Sunday.

The remarks from House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., come after Trump leveled the most direct criticism of Mueller and the credibility of his investigation - a dramatic move by the president that has nonetheless done little to make GOP lawmakers fret publicly that the special counsel could soon be dismissed. But he said Republican leaders should be strongly warning Trump not to take action against Mueller.

The deeply frustrated president has fumed to confidants that the Mueller probe is "going to choke the life out of" his presidency if allowed to continue unabated indefinitely, according to an outside adviser who insisted on anonymity.
