Austin bomber acted alone

Two injured in mysterious Texas bombing fourth in month

Police identified the suspect as Mark Anthony Conditt, 23, who died on the side of a frontage road north of Austin after setting off a bomb in his auto early Wednesday while pursued by police, authorities say.

Fred Milanowski, an agent with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, said it was "hard to say" if the bombing suspect had acted alone. Manley told reporters that when officers approached Conditt's vehicle, he detonated a bomb, knocking one officer back and wounding him.

Police questioned two people who lived with the suspect in Pflugerville on Wednesday, though they did not identify either person.

In the incident near San Antonio, the device detonated on an automatic conveyor, Police Chief Michael Hansen said.

Using surveillance video from a FedEx store in south Austin, investigators keyed in on Conditt, who they tracked to a hotel in Round Rock, Texas, about 15 miles northeast of the Texas capital. "We don't know where this suspect has spent his last 24 hours, and therefore we still need to remain vigilant to ensure that no other packages or devices have been left throughout the community", Austin Police Chief Brian Manley said.

FedEx officials provided "key evidence" that led to the suspect's identification, the company told employees in an internal memo seen by Reuters on Wednesday. Roughly 24 hours before his death, Austin police received a tip about a person of interest, who turned into a suspect.

Pflugerville Mayor Victor Gonzales told The Associated Press on Wednesday that police had surveillance on the home overnight Tuesday, though he said he didn't personally know the family.

Authorities on Wednesday warned of the possibility that more bombs had yet to be found. Though the complaint affidavit against Conditt is sealed, it dealt with charges from March 2 through Tuesday, encompassing the time frame from when the first bomb exploded in Austin through the charges yesterday.

Witnesses reported the suspect outside a FedEx drop-off location wearing a "crazy disguise" including a wig and rubber gloves. The other was intercepted at a sorting facility near the Austin airport. Manley said the suspect is believed to be responsible for all the major Austin bombings.

Law enforcement officials did not respond to calls seeking to confirm the suspect's name. I-35 in Round Rock expected to be closed 4-6 hrs. Once he got in his auto, they pursued him until he pulled onto the side of the road.

The suspect detonated a device in his vehicle and later died, Austin police chief Brian Manley told an early morning news conference after the dramatic end to the massive manhunt involving hundreds of federal agents and local police. Another officer fired his gun at the vehicle.

Authorities said it was too soon to say if the suspect had worked alone. However, he was alone when he drove away from the hotel in Round Rock and detonated the explosive in his auto. But police warned that more bombs could be out there. The four bombs were placed on porches and in front yards, and were not delivered through postal services like FedEx, UPS, of USPS. They happened in east Austin areas with predominantly minority residents. Some have expressed concerns that the attacks might allegedly be racially motivated.

The first explosion killed 39-year-old Anthony Stephan House on March 2. The third blast critically injured an unnamed 75-year-old woman.

In the fourth blast, a device was triggered by a tripwire, injuring two white men in a predominantly white area. Two people died in the string of attacks and multiple others were injured.

In one post, he argued that gay marriage should be illegal. Just look at the male and female bodies ...

Authorities had initially believed the bombings may be hate crimes because the victims of the earliest blasts were black, but they backed off that theory after Hispanic and white victims from different parts of the city were also affected.
