Apple Confirms Siri Bug That Exposes Notifications Will Be Fixed

Apple to stop Siri from reading hidden lock screen notifications

The fix is likely to come in iOS 11.3, which remains in beta testing, but Apple might also address the problem in iOS 11.2.7.

Another option is to turn off lock screen notifications to apps you think to carry sensitive information. Things started looking brighter after the iOS 11.1.3 update but things have tanked once again.

The site verified that the bug is in both iOS 11.2.6 and the beta of iOS 11.3.

However, a Mac Magazine reader discovered that Siri will read the content of most messages even though the content is hidden on the display.

The new bug is not about a botched up functionality but it is something that can be used to spy on others notifications.

On the iPhone X, notification previews are hidden by default and details are shown only after Face ID authentication. Go to Settings Notifications select an app and toggle off "Show on Lock Screen". This, however, can be bypassed by using Siri.

Credit: Tom's GuideThe folks over at Brazilian website Mac Magazine have discovered a bug in Siri that will allow anyone to request the virtual personal assistant read hidden messages aloud.

That being said, this issue only seems to affect third-party apps since Siri didn't read out SMS notifications.

While no specific timeline was given, it stands to reason that a fix will be arriving sooner rather than later given the security ramifications of the bug. Such design flaws in Digital Assistants will only make it more risky and thus override the usability. It has reported it to Apple.

We've reached out to Apple and will update this story if we receive a response.

Alternatively, iPhone users can fully disable Siri whenever their device is locked by heading to Settings Siri & Search Allow Siri When Locked.
