Lawmakers call on Facebook to testify on Cambridge Analytica data misuse

The 'megalomaniac' behind the mask

If Facebook discovers any other misuse of personal data, it will ban the app, Zuckerberg said. That's the data mining firm that worked for Donald Trump's campaign, and now stands accused of lifting data from some 50 million Facebook users for the goal of influencing voters.

"This was a major breach of trust. We look forward to working with Facebook and Mr. Zuckerberg to determine a date and time in the near future for a hearing before this committee".

After five days of silence, Zuckerberg released a Facebook post admitting mistakes and outlining steps to protect user data.

Zuckerberg also emphasized steps the company has already taken, including reducing access outside apps had to user data in 2014.

Committee Chairman John Thune, Republican-South Dakota, and ranking member Bill Nelson, Democrat-Florida, said they made a decision to ask Zuckerberg to testify due to questions about Facebook's responsibilities and obligations to users.

Zuckerberg spoke with CNN senior tech correspondent Laurie Segall, with the segment airing during Anderson Cooper 360. Durbin added, "He can prove me wrong and show up when we get back from the Easter recess".

Ryan Eldridge of Nerds on Call spoke with KTVU about what happened in Facebook's massive data breach and how to best protect your personal data.

Many Facebook users flocked to the social media platform and commented the word, "BFF" in the comments section and turned out relived after the word turned "green".

More: Zuckerberg is willing to testify to Congress, isn't sure if the Russians have your data. Facebook was unable to answer many questions, two aides who attended the briefing said.

And while you may not see updates about near-forgotten schoolmates or that random person you met six years ago, the people who matter most will stick around.

But despite its notorious reputation in the digital world, many political insiders say Cambridge Analytica fell short of what it promised clients it could do. More importantly, the social giant plans to reduce the amount of personal information developers can access when you sign into an app or service using your Facebook account.

"Kaiser's revelations will reignite a fierce argument about the tactics used to try to influence voters in the Brexit campaign - and will add to the pressure on Alexander Nix, the [suspended] CEO of Cambridge Analytica. The company is already under investigation by the Electoral Commission over what role, if any, it played in the European Union referendum campaign".

However, the academic who provided the data disputed that on Wednesday.

This is valuable, predictive information, which Kogan later provided to Cambridge Analytica.

Dr Kogan was publishing under the name Aleksandr Spectre at the time. That's when the company changed its policies to limit what information third-party apps that you use could gather about your friends and started reviewing apps that asked for extensive data.

"We just put information into the bloodstream to the internet, and then watch it grow, give it a little push every now and again over time to watch it take shape", he said.

Even before that, users have considered dumping Facebook after growing exhausted of political disagreements with friends and relatives.
