Pulse gunman's father was an FBI Informer, widow's lawyer says

Defense requests a mistrial or dismissal in Noor Salman trial over information about Mateen's father

The defense said the new revelations present two theories of the case that should have been on the table since the beginning of Salman's trial: "1) Omar Mateen and his father, rather than Ms. Salman, conspired to support ISIS; or 2) the FBI's focus on Ms. Salman was based on its own motive to avoid responsibility for its failures with its own informant, Seddique Mateen, as well as his son".

Salman's attorneys say prosecutors informed them Seddique Mateen was an informant from 2005 to 2016 in an email Saturday that also revealed he's now being investigated for suspicious money transfers to Turkey and Afghanistan discovered in his home the day of the Pulse attack.

Her lawyers, who have characterized this text as Salman simply asking her husband to communicate their plans with his mother, said this new disclosure raises questions about whether a cover story was even necessary.

Her lawyers' motion said U.S. Attorney Sara Sweeney sent them an email Saturday revealing some details of the FBI's involvement with Seddique Mateen's activities leading up to the Pulse attack.

Salman, 31, is charged with aiding and abetting her husband Omar Mateen in his attempt to provide material support to a terrorist organization, and obstruction of justice.

Salman's lawyers say the government's belated disclosure about Mateen's father and his ties to the Federal Bureau of Investigation has prevented them from exploring the possibilities that Seddique Mateen was more directly involved, and that Salman may have been framed to hide the government's mistakes.

"I am sorry for what happened", she said in a statement entered into the court.

Mateen had been investigated years before the shooting for making comments at work about connections to Al Qaeda, Hezbollah and the Muslim Brotherhood.

The other is for log data - a record of what a user does, such as when they log in, click on a Facebook group or post a comment. The firm's acting CEO , Alexander Tyler, said Cambridge Analytica was prepared to fully cooperate with the investigation .

Former federal prosecutor David S. Weinstein agreed that if the defense had this information about Mateen's father before trial, they could have planted doubt in the minds of jurors that Salman was ever involved.

Her attorneys were scheduled to begin their defense on Monday.

Mateen's father was also investigated after agents assigned to the shooting investigation found receipts for money transfers to Turkey and Afghanistan, according to a motion filed Sunday by Salman's defense.

In the days after the attack, which took the lives of 49 people, Seddique Matteen told CNN he was "shocked" to hear his son had committed such atrocities.

Seddique Mateen was on the prosecution's witness list, but was not called to testify in the trial. Evidence was discovered in his home the day of the Pulse attack. Omar Mateen, 29, claimed allegiance to a member of the Islamic State militant group and was killed by police after the rampage.

Dana Rohrabacher, (R-Costa Mesa) said Mateen "paid a visit" to his office in November 2014, but didn't recall any specifics.

"We always felt that there were huge problems with this case and suspicious motivations on behalf of the government to prosecute Noor on such little evidence".
