Cosby's quaalude use at issue as lawyers spar ahead of trial

Jury selection for the trial will begin on Monday.

Jury selection is scheduled to begin Monday as the 80-year-old Cosby faces charges he drugged and molested former Temple University athletics administrator Andrea Constand at his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004. The portion of the deposition including Quaaludes is one of the parts that tripped up jurors during five days and 52 hours of deliberations before a mistrial was declared last June.

After Bill Cosby's lawyers called for Pennsylvania Judge Steven T. O'Neill to recuse himself from Cosby's retrial over conflicts of interest, O'Neill announced he would not be stepping down.

The AP does not typically identify people who say they are victims of sexual assault unless they grant permission, which Constand and Dickinson have done.

DA Kevin Steele would like Cosby's admitted quaalude use, a major component of the first trial that ended in a hung jury a year ago, included in evidence. "It was not to assault them". Those women weren't allowed to testify at the first trial.

Steele says the testimony, along with the testimonies of additional accusers, bolsters their plan to portray Cosby as a serial predator.

Bill Cosby has arrived at a suburban Philadelphia courthouse for the second day of pretrial hearings ahead of his retrial on sexual assault charges.

Though Constand is a lesbian, her sexual orientation did not come up in the last trial, where the defense tried to show that she and Cosby had consensual romantic relationship.

Prosecutors say they want O'Neill to allow the testimony; otherwise, they'd only be able to use it to cross-examine Cosby if he testifies.

She, Paulette Wilson , Albert Thompson and many other British people of Commonwealth origin are victims of institutional racism. One of the placards read "For the many, not the Jew" - a play on Labour's "For the many, not the few" campaign slogan.

A huge part of Cosby's case from previous year was his admitted use of quaaludes.

The prosecution says that Jackson's claims are hearsay; by Cosby's own admission, they note, Constand never asked for the pills he gave her, and she only visited his home when invited. On Friday, Assistant DA Stewart Ryan made the argument that Cosby's use of the drugs meant he always understood the impact they have on the women he allegedly drugged.

While O'Neill dealt Cosby's lawyers a blow by allowing the testimony from additional accusers, Cosby's lawyers are counting on him to make rulings critical to their plan to portray the accuser as a greedy liar who framed the comedian.

James also stated she's anxious the jury will make an inaccurate connection to the incident between Cosby and Andrea Constand, a former Temple employee and the main accuser for Cosby's retrial, and the details of his deposition, because the drugs used in the alleged assault are not Quaaludes.

O'Neill reportedly was visibly upset by the latest defense attempt to delay the retrial.

Cosby's lawyers accused prosecutors of trying to use the deposition testimony (and expected testimony from five of his alleged victims) to distract jurors from Constand's case.

Cosby's lawyers said they were only told of these witnesses last week and would need more time to prepare if Judge Steven O'Neill allows them to testify.

But on Thursday, the judge refused demands to recuse himself over his wife's work with sex assault victims.
