John Paul Stevens: Repeal the Second Amendment

Debbie Wasserman Schultz March for Our Lives

Speaking at a union hall in Richfield, Ohio, the president referred to an article penned this week by retired liberal Justice John Paul Stevens, who said students protesting school shootings in the USA should advocate for repealing the Second Amendment. Since then, says Stevens, who wrote the dissenting opinion in that case, the NRA has developed into a powerful propaganda tool.

Stevens was on the losing end of a 2008 ruling, District of Columbia v. Heller, for which the high court upheld the Second Amendment's right to bear arms for self-defense.

Regardless, what I found interesting is that, apparently, the pro-Second Amendment kids didn't know what the consequences would be and walked out anyway. He served on the court from 1975 until his retirement in 2010. "They reveal the broad public support for legislation to minimize the risk of mass killings of schoolchildren and others in our society", he continued. "While we understand the push for something to be done to stop violence at the hands of criminals, the Second Amendment exists to protect lives, and should never be repealed".

How does Stevens view the amendments of the Constitution, and what leads to such a bold call from a leading legal mind? When did the Second Amendment become a license allowing grenade launchers and other military people-killers in the home?

"We think that the focus has to remain on removing weapons from risky individuals, not on blocking all Americans from their constitutional rights", she said.

The former justice argued that repealing the Second Amendment would "weaken the N.R.A.'s ability to stymie legislative debate and block constructive gun control legislation than any other available option".
