Trump lawyer handled $1.6 million payoff for Republican donor

Trump Attorney Michael Cohen Facilitated Payment to Ex-Playboy Model Impregnated by Leading GOP Fundraiser From L.A.: Source

Elliott Broidy, a prominent Republican fundraiser, resigned Friday from his position as a deputy finance chair of the Republican National Committee in the wake of a report that Michael Cohen, President Trump's personal lawyer, arranged for Broidy to pay $1.6 million to a former Playboy model who claimed that Broidy impregnated her previous year.

"She alone decided that she did not want to continue with the pregnancy and I offered to help her financially during this hard period", Broidy said in a statement provided to the AP.

Broidy, a close friend of Trump's, works on the Republican National Committee with Cohen.

The involvement of this lawyer, who was reportedly named in the Broidy NDA as Paul Patterson, complicates an already convoluted story.

Cohen and Davidson did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The FBI raided Cohen's office, hotel room and home earlier this week. The money will be paid to her in quarterly installments and the first installment was due on December 1, the Journal reported.

The week has gone from bad to worse for US President Donald Trump's embattled lawyer Michael Cohen after damning reports of yet another high-profile "hush money" sex scandal within the RNC emerged Friday.

Broidy apologized to his wife and family for the affair with the Playmate, who discovered she was pregnant and chose to get an abortion.

Cohen negotiated the deal, worth $1.6 million, on behalf of Elliott Broidy, a California-based venture capitalist, close ally of President Trump, and the deputy finance chair of the Republican National Committee. After the woman became pregnant, she retained Keith Davidson, a lawyer who also represented Stormy Daniels when she agreed to accept the hush payment from Cohen.

Cohen has been a staple in headlines since the Federal Bureau of Investigation raided his hotel room and office in NY on Monday.

Broidy, a former national vice chair of the Trump campaign, resigned on Friday as deputy finance chair of the Republican National Committee, according to a person familiar with that matter. Just last month, Broidy hosted a Los Angeles fundraiser for Trump.

In the deal, Broidy denies the woman's claims and also agrees not to seek further legal retribution.

Broidy, an investor, already was in the sights of the special prosecutor, Robert Mueller, because of his relationship with George Nader, a businessman who serves as an adviser to the de facto ruler of the United Arab Emirates, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahya.

"I acknowledge I had a consensual relationship with a Playboy Playmate".

"At the end of our relationship, this woman shared with me that she was pregnant", he said. "She alone decided that she did not want to continue with the pregnancy and I offered to help her financially during this hard period", he added.

The nondisclosure agreement between Broidy and the woman includes the woman's allegation that Broidy paid her for a sexual relationship that lasted one to two years, The Journal reported. Daniels sued Trump on the grounds that the non-disclosure agreement she signed regarding the affair was invalid. Those are the same names used to identify Donald Trump and Daniels (real name Stephanie Clifford) in a 2016 agreement.
