Reported overnight missile strikes in Syria false alarm

The “March of the Uprooted” is organized by the Higher Arab Monitoring Committee and is held annually on Independence Day

Even before the recent clashes with Israel, many average Iranians were publicly asking: What is Iran doing spending billions of dollars - which were supposed to go to Iranians as a result of the lifting of sanctions from the Iran nuclear deal - fighting wars in Syria, Lebanon and Yemen?

While acknowledging that it has carried out scores of strikes in Syria against suspect Iranian deployments or arms transfers to Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas, Israel generally does not comment on specific missions.

Israel also has said that Iranians should stay away from the Jordanian border and that Syria should not become a permanent home to Iranian forces. Iran has vowed to punish Israel for the attack, which targeted Tehran's unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) drone program at the base.

The ratcheting up of tensions comes as Syria's President Bashar al-Assad, with the help of Iranian forces, had made gains against rebels seeking to unseat him.

If true, that suggests that the Quds Force - commanded by Iran's military mastermind Qassem Suleimani - was trying to launch an actual military strike on Israel. The leaders of Europe can put significant pressure on Iran's military by suspending its oil imports.

After this month's attack on the T4 base, Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Liebermanwarned that Israel "will not allow Iranian entrenchment in Syria no matter the price to pay".

The attack over the weekend was an important message of deterrence that the USA would stand behind its word to not tolerate the use of non-conventional weapons, said Moshe Yaalon, a former Israeli defense minister and chief of staff, in an interview with Israel Radio.

Roni Daniel, military editor for Israeli TV station Mako, said the disclosure was a signal to Iran that its deployments in Syria "are totally exposed to us, and if you take action against us to avenge (the T-4 strike) these targets will be very severely harmed".

Friedman described the seven Iranians killed as members of the Qods Force, a branch of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps that oversees operations overseas, and one of them as a commander of a drone unit.

"Everyone in Trump's national security team regards Iran not just as a threat to Israel, but to the United States".

By Sunday night, the White House issued a statement stressing that the US would not be drawn into the wider war.

Israel has bombed Syrian sites several times in the course of the country's civil war.

But to date, Russian Federation and Iran have backed Assad at every turn, and appear unlikely to abandon him now that he has weathered the storm of the past seven years. The action is believed to have been taken in response to an attempt to fly a UAV into northern Israel on 10 February.
