Russian lawyer who met with Trump campaign admits to being Kremlin informant

Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya said “I am a lawyer and I am an informant,” in an NBC interview

As that meeting has become central to investigations of whether or not the Trump campaign colluded with Kremlin efforts to disrupt the 2016 election, Trump Jr.'s insistence that the lawyer provided no information and that the meeting amounted to nothing, coupled with the fact that the lawyer has maintained that she has no ties to the Russian government, have been paramount.

Newly released emails reveal Veselnitskaya had an apparent working relationship with Russia's top prosecutor general, Yuri Chaika. "I operate independently of any governmental bodies", she wrote in her Senate Judiciary Committee statement.

The Times said that the Russian prosecutor general's office did not respond to requests for comment and that Veselnitskaya said she would respond in two weeks.

"Dear Sergei Aleksandrovich! I am sending you the edits to the response, in accordance with instructions".

"Dear Sergei Aleksandrovich!" Ms. Veselnitskaya wrote on August 2, 2014, in one of at least 11 emails exchanged.

This was not the first time Veselnitskaya has spoken about her relationship to Chaika.

She told the Russian news agency Interfax this week that her email account was hacked this year. Now living outside of Russian Federation, he is a vocal critic of the Kremlin and President Vladimir Putin.

Veselnitskaya was helping to defend the Prevezon Holdings company and its owner, Denis Katsyv. USA authorities alleged that Prevezon had been the recipient of laundered funds from a massive tax fraud scheme that stole $250 million from the Russian treasury in the mid-2000s.

In May 2017, on the eve of the beginning of a civil asset forfeiture trial in Manhattan, the company and US prosecutors settled the case. The Justice Department eventually settled with the firm for $6 million, but Prevezon has yet to pay.

Khodorkovsky spent a decade in prison on fraud and tax-evasion convictions. US lawmakers enacted a law named for him that imposed travel and financial sanctions against Russians believed to be involved in his death.

A Russian lawyer who met with members of Donald Trump's presidential campaign in Trump Tower in June 2016 on the premise of offering damaging information about the Democratic nominee had closer ties to the Kremlin that she has previously acknowledged, The New York Times reported on Friday.

Veselnitskaya has denied having connections to the Kremlin since her meeting with then-candidate Donald Trump's son, son-in-law and campaign chairman.
