Seven students killed in China stab attack

At least seven dead and 19 wounded in a stabbing attack in China

A stabbing spree on Friday evening in China's Shaanxi Province has left seven junior high school students dead and 12 others injured.

Zhao reportedly told authorities he had been bullied by classmates while he was a student at the same middle school and that he "hated" other students.

The incident took place at around 6.10pm local time, the department added.

A video posted by The Paper, a daily, on video-sharing website Miaopai.com shows two or three bodies lying on the ground in a narrow lane.

Last night, The Paper reported that people packed public squares in Mizhi and Suide counties as well as Yulin in order to donate blood to the victims of the attack.

Police said that five girls and two boys had been killed in the attack, and another nine girls and three boys were injured. It said initially that seven children were killed and 12 injured.

Knives are more commonly used in attacks in China, where ownership of guns is illegal.

Attacks have also targeted schoolchildren in the past.

In January 2017, for example, 11 kindergarten students were wounded by a man with a kitchen knife.

Another man wounded 10 children on the southern island province of Hainan in February 2016 - and then took his own life. In 2010, a spate of stabbings prompted the government to tighten security at schools, installing gates and cameras and training security guards to fend off attackers.

According to available information, the attack was sudden and occurred at the time when the children went from school home about 18.10 local time (13.10 GMT).
