Toronto stock market shuts down, while USA markets flat

All trading on the exchanges is reported to have ceased at 1:39 p.m. ET. "Trading will not resume today, including market on close", TMX Group said in a statement on its website.

Besides the Toronto Stock Exchange, which primarily handles equities of some of Canada's biggest companies, the company also operates the TSX Venture Exchange, the TSX Alpha Exchange and the Montreal Exchange, which is Canada's largest market for trading derivatives. Fewer than 575 million Canadian shares traded Friday, the slowest session since July 24, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. "Further updates will be provided", TMX Group said in a tweet.

Traders turned to rival exchanges to place orders, including Nasdaq Inc.

The U.S. -listed shares of several Canada-based firms were still trading even as their Toronto-listed securities were idled by the outage.
