Patton Oswalt Has Some Questions For The 'Golden State Killer'

Joseph James De Angelo Jr was arrested in California Tuesday night on two murder charges. The now-72-year-old is suspected of being the Golden State Killer

But Steve Mercer of the Maryland public defender's office says it pinpoints a problem: There aren't strong privacy laws to keep police from trolling such databases. The suspect, they said, was tied to many of those crimes through DNA.

"We found the needle in the haystack and it was here in Sacramento, " she continued.

It "is just the beginning of the prosecution of Mr. DeAngelo", said Ventura County District Attorney Greg Totten.

GEDMatch is a free site where users who have DNA profiles from commercial companies such as Ancestry.com and 23andMe can upload them to expand their search for relatives.

"I've been so obsessed with nothing but this case for so long and we've got children, we've got grandchildren, we have lives, we have jobs - things we've got to do".

After decades of dead ends, police have finally captured the Golden State Killer, and it was in large part thanks to the work done by late true crime writer Michelle McNamara.

Oswalt was slated to talk about his new show AP Bio, but news of the arrest overshadowed that instantly.

"He knew police techniques", said John Jay College of Criminal Justice professor Louis Schlesinger.

The "Golden State Killer" is believed to be responsible for 12 murders and almost 50 rapes.

Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones referred to the genetic materials as "discarded DNA", however authorities on the time refused to offer specifics about the way it was collected or matched to the suspect.

McNamara began researching for the book years before she began formally working on it in 2013.

Darvish tosses six stellar innings as Cubs win
After issuing a two-out double to Domingo Santana in the sixth, Darvish struck out Hernan Perez on a slider to end his afternoon. Hopefully, he will be back this weekend so Bryant can get this nasty memory of a fastball to the head situation behind him.

(It took them more than four decades to find this guy, and her book came out two months ago.) If nothing else, by dragging the cold case back into the light, McNamara's dogged pursuit of the Golden State Killer put renewed pressure on law enforcement to find him.

Sacramento County sheriff's Lt. Paul Belli said Thursday that authorities are also looking for weapons and other items that can link 72-year-old suspect James Joseph DeAngelo to the crimes in the 1970s and '80s.

DeAngelo's name hadn't been on McNamara's radar screen, said Billy Jensen, an investigative journalist who helped write the book.

Although DeAngelo looked like an average elderly neighbor, those who lived in his Citrus Heights, CA neighborhood knew he had a temper.

DeAngelo was a police officer in Exeter, Calif., from 1973 to 1976, and in Auburn from 1976 to 1979.

DeAngelo was a "black sheep" who didn't joke around with other officers, said Farrel Ward, 75, who served on the force with DeAngelo.

DeAngelo, described by neighbors as an oddball and loner known to fly into occasional fits of solitary rage, is suspected of 12 slayings in all. Authorities said other charges could be filed. She really did the hard work, and she felt like this was going to happen. "I don't understand that". On July 21, 1979, DeAngelo was arrested for shoplifting, and was sacked from his job.

"I hope you got him, Michelle", Oswalt tweeted.

While the arrest of DeAngelo makes the world a safer place, it also draws attention to the fact that in the case of genetic databases, complete, informed consent, particularly by people who aren't using the service directly, is basically impossible.

Huddle said he is stunned thinking now about who he was talking to.
