White House to China: Cut the 'Orwellian Nonsense'

GETTYAirlines for America confirmed they received the demand

China responded to this tough rebuke Monday.

Although former colonies Hong Kong and Macau are recognized as special administrative regions belonging to China, Taiwan is a democratic, self-ruled state.

The White House on Saturday condemned China's efforts to control how US airlines refer to Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, saying the push to make them comply with Chinese standards is "Orwellian nonsense". "Follow our laws if you want stay!" "The websites of both United and American list airports in Taiwan only as 'Taiwan, ' without reference to China", reported Foreign Policy.

Taiwan is China's most sensitive territorial issue.

This comes after Beijing ordered three dozen worldwide airlines to list Taiwan as part of Mainland China, which is a move criticized by the U.S.as "Orwellian nonsense".

In all, almost 40 global airlines have been targeted for running afoul of Beijing's dictates on areas it claims as part of Mainland China's holdings. "The United States strongly objects to China's attempts to compel private firms to use specific language of a political nature in their publicly available content", the statement added.

A Taiwanese editor, tapped to head a men's fashion magazine in China, was replaced at the last minute, allegedly due to a ribbon he wore at a farewell party that read "take back the mainland".

According to a statement delivered by White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, US President Donald Trump would "stand up for Americans resisting efforts by the Chinese Communist Party to impose Chinese political correctness on American companies and citizens". "We call on China to stop threatening and coercing American carriers and citizens".

"Whatever the USA said will never change the objective fact that there is only one China in the world and that the Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan regions are an inalienable part of China's territory", Geng noted.

The Trump administration made it clear Saturday that Beijing will not be allowed to export censorship and its own Communist Party brand of political correctness to the rest of the world.

The latest letter comes as Beijing's worsening trade spat with the U.S. heightens tensions between the two economic giants.

Qantas believes its material complies with Australia's One China policy.

China has hit back at USA claims a push by Beijing to stop foreign airlines referring to Taiwan as a separate state is "Orwellian nonsense".
