Multiple Explosions Rock Kabul As Attackers Target Police Stations

Series of blasts hits Kabul casualties feared

Daesh claimed the first attack on a police station in a heavily Shiite-populated neighbourhood in the city's west, which police spokesman Hashmatullah Estanakzai told AFP had ended.

The second attack took place in front of a police station in Shar-e-Naw neighbourhood in downtown Kabul where a "search and clearing operation" was still under way.

"The enemies of Afghanistan are proving nothing else with these attacks other than their enmity towards the people of Afghanistan", it said, in a statement.

Tala Barfaak district governor Ismail Barfaki told Tolo News channel that roads to the district were closed after the Taliban attacked different routes on Tuesday.

"A suicide bomber detonated his vest at the entrance of the street and a auto dropped four other attackers nearby", Barmak explained. Health ministry spokesman Wahidullah Majroh said the casualty toll was likely to rise once security forces were able to get a clearer picture of the attack.

At least 6 people were injured, informed the press-Secretary of the Ministry of health Wahidullah Mirah, adding that the total number of victims is likely to grow. Both the Taliban and IS frequently target Afghanistan's Western-backed government and security forces. It was the deadliest assault on reporters because the fall of the Taliban in 2001.

Kabul police spokesman Hashmat Stanekzai confirmed an explosion near one police station on Wednesday and said a gunbattle was underway there. The Taliban have captured several districts in different parts of the country from Afghan security forces since 2014, when the United States and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation formally concluded their combat mission and shifted to a supporting role.

Mohammad Hashim, a member of parliament from Faryab province, said the Taliban captured the district headquarters in Bilchirgh early on Wednesday after more than 40 security forces retreated under heavy fire. He said the Taliban also captured several villages nearby.

The Taliban issued an announcement saying they management the district and claiming to have killed 10 safety forces.

With preparations for elections now underway across much of the country, more attacks are expected on voter registration centers following a blast in one center last month in which 60 people lining up for identity cards were killed.

Abdul Aziz Beg, head of the governing council in the western Badghis province, said two other soldiers were wounded and one is missing.

"There are various areas within the province underneath a excessive safety menace, and this website was a type of areas", he mentioned, including that the middle was some 20 miles west of the provincial capital of Qala-e Now.

He confirmed six attackers and two policemen were killed in these assaults.

But despite repeated government pledges to tighten security, authorities have appeared powerless to stop the periodic attacks that have killed and wounded hundreds of people and undermined confidence in the authorities.
