Sanders Goes Off Over Questions About Trump Threatening to Strip Press Credentials

President Trump speaks to members of the media

In his latest volley against the free press, United States president Donald Trump on Wednesday suggested that reporters have their credentials revoked for reporting negative news about him, calling such reporting "fake".

Matt Drudge, who generally supports the President, is very much against the concept, but noted Democrats had floated a similar idea before Trump became President. In a tweet, he complained that "despite the tremendous success we are having with the economy & all things else, " most network news about him is "negative (Fake)".

Trump has always had a rough relation with the media even when he was campaigning for the presidential election in 2016, dubbing it as fake and corrupt. "How would the suggestion of taking American journalists' press credentials away [be] advocating for a free press in this country?" she asked.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders on Wednesday declared that a pay-for-play scandal facing President Donald Trump's former attorney, Michael Cohen, "has nothing to do with the White House".

Revoking press credentials for news organizations means they can not access the White House and events held there, greatly hobbling their ability to do business.

The implication is that the White House will restrict press access if journalists do not cover Trump more favorably.

Broadcast coverage of Trump consistently ranks at around 90% negative, while Trump's job approval has ranged from around 35% to near 50%. He also suggested negative news about his administration was "fake".

Since taking up the presidency, Trump has strongly favored news outlets that provide glowing coverage such as Fox News, the Daily Caller, Newsmax and Sinclair, a group of nearly 200 local TV stations.

Early in the Administration, former Press Secretary Sean Spicer was accused of barring reporters from certain outlets from a briefing in early 2017, just hours after the President had slammed the press.
