Republican lawmaker sees House immigration bill failing -Fox News

Trump warns Maxine Waters 'Be careful what you wish for'

The U.S. House rejected a second immigration bill Wednesday, despite being broader in scope and having last-minute support from President Trump.

As the media and political establishment braced itself for immigration to dominate the 2018 midterms, Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement from the United States Supreme Court. Trump reversed the policy last week, and a federal judge on Tuesday ordered reunification, but that did not stop Democrats from piling on.

Republicans have been scrambling to cobble together an immigration compromise between hardline and moderate factions of the party - something Trump, who has faced a groundswell of criticism over his administration's zero tolerance policy at the border, was reportedly behind. At first, Trump said he wouldn't back the compromise bill in an interview with Fox News only to have his staff issue a statement later that day saying he would back it.

This spring they launched a petition that could have led to House passage of liberal-leaning measures creating a pathway to citizenship, bills backed by Democrats but opposed by most Republicans.

The vote caps months of futile GOP efforts to pass wide-ranging legislation on an issue that could color scores of congressional races in this fall's contest for House and perhaps Senate control.

She said they should start with the most pressing problems, such as the family separations on the border.

"It would have replaced 2.2 million of his own voters", he said.

He called on Congress to fix the Flores agreement.

Trump ran for office on a platform that included tough anti-immigration language and has in office taken a hard-line position on migration from several Muslim-majority countries and also from Central America.

By a 301-121 vote, the Republican-controlled House rejected a bill that addressed family separations but also gave long-term protections to young "Dreamer" immigrants brought to the country years ago illegally as children, and provided funding for President Donald Trump's proposed U.S. -Mexico border wall.

The bill would have offered a path to citizenship to hundreds of thousands of immigrants who were brought to the United States as children, allocated $25 billion dollars for a wall on the U.S. -Mexico border, made it more hard for immigrants to seek asylum, and eliminated several avenues of legal immigration, among other provisions.

But the measure was widely expected to fail.

Another factor that would have poured cold water on support for both bills was signals from the U.S. Senate that either of the bills would likely have been dead on arrival in that chamber.

"There's no unicorn - nothing that Jim Jordan would vote for that Carlos Curbelo could ever support", said one senior GOP aide, referring to a non-existent bill that could bridge the gap between the conference's most conservative and moderate members.

Most of the 36-member Texas delegation voted against the bill, including all the Democrats.
