World Cup 2018 Japan Bidding To Make History Says Akira Nishino

Cape Town - Belgium defeated Japan 3-2 in a World Cup Round of 16 thriller as Nacer Chadli grabbed a dramatic victor in stoppage time to break Japanese hearts at the Rostov Arena.

Japan earlier struck twice through Genki Haraguchi and Takashi Inui in the second half but Belgium hit back with three goals in the last 25 minutes.

Roberto Martinez's side were trailing 2-0 when he brought on Marouane Fellaini and Nacer Chadli in the 65th minute, and Fellaini scored the equaliser before Chadli netted a 94th-minute victor.

Belgium will play Brazil in the quarter finals on Friday (July 6).

Both sides had their chances in the first half, and were committed to playing attractive, attacking soccer - a nice change after Sunday's action - but neither was able to get behind the other's defense with any regularity.

The last 10 minutes of Japan's final group game against Poland were nothing short of farcical.

Nearly immediately Eden Hazard struck the post for Belgium, but in their next attack Japan doubled their score, when Shinji Kagawa back-heeled to Inui on the edge of the area, and he had time to tee up a shot inside the keeper's left post.

Then Japan went 2-0 up through.

Vertonghen made amends for making the error that gifted Japan its opening goal.

Chaldi, who came on as a substitute in the 65th, decided it in injury time. Romelu Lukaku dummied Meunier's cross, leaving Nacer Chadli wide open at the back post to win it for his country.
