Oppressive Heat and Humidity, Localized Downpours

'Extreme, dangerous' heat to continue this week, meteorologists say

A dog in Brick, New Jersey, died on Tuesday after being left in extreme heat over the weekend. In fact, we beat the previous wettest June by over three inches thanks to the torrential rain last Friday. Some of the storms will be slow-movers bringing lots of rain to some towns while others nearby get nothing at all.

Shower chances increase big time with an impressive cold front moving in Thursday.

For many locations more than a few miles away from the ocean, this will be a protracted heat wave probably maxing out at 7 or 8 consecutive days! 5 down, 2 to go!

An excessive heat warning is in effect through Tuesday night, with heat index values - which combine temperature and humidity - in New York City reaching 106 degrees Fahrenheit (41°C). Cooler sea breezes will develop on the shore each day with highs in the 80s. A spotty thunderstorm can't be ruled out later in the day or evening, especially in northern and western areas, but most areas will be dry for picnics and fireworks.

Priante said Lehigh Valley residents likely won't feel any real relief until a minimum of Wednesday, July 4 for Independence Day. Forecasters were concerned about a thunderstorm that was producing golf ball-size hail and damaging winds.

Storms return early next week. Warm and humid. Areas of fog. Chance for an isolated shower/storm in the afternoon.

Simpson said the humidity will probably stick around until later in the week, leaving sometime Friday or Saturday. Lightning and thunder are also possible, but severe weather is not expected.

SATURDAY: Cooler, less humid.

On Sunday, temperatures in parts of NY and CT, were forecast to hit up to 100 degrees but appeared to settle in the high and mid-90s by the late afternoon. Overnight temperatures should fall back into the 60s, and the highs should be in the low 80s over the weekend.
