United States job growth strong but unemployment rate rises to 4%

Ford trucks rolls of the line at a plan in Ohio

The U.S. economy surpassed expectations in June, adding more jobs than expected even as the unemployment rate rose slightly to 4 percent.

Today's figures also showed that the USA unemployment rate rose to 4% from an 18-year low of 3.8% in May as more people entered the labour force in the sign of confidence in the jobs market. The average hourly wage has increased by just 2.7 percent in the previous year. The U.S. central bank increased interest rates last month for the second time this year and has projected two more rate hikes by year end.

For the fourth consecutive month, Montreal had a lower unemployment rate than Toronto in June. Some recent reports have suggested that businesses can't find qualified workers at the wages they're offering - but this report "did not have any evidence to back up those claims", said Elise Gould, a senior economist with the Economic Policy Institute.

Rose warned the city's unemployment rate could be slower to drop in the coming months because Edmontonians who were too discouraged to previously search for employment were more likely to resume that search.

President Donald Trump and Republicans are running on a growing economy going into the 2018 midterm elections, especially since Trump signed the Republican tax reform plan into law at the end of 2017.

The broader US economy appears sturdy. The U.S. and China slapped tit-for-tat duties on $34 billion worth of the other's imports on Friday.

The job numbers for the month of June indicate USA manufacturing continues to gain momentum. The manufacturing sector buzzed with activity last month, and spending on construction rose. But retailers cut 21,600 jobs last month, after boosting payrolls by 25,100 in May.

Looking at the bigger picture, the best measure of how robust the labor market is (the ratio of those aged 25-54 who have jobs to the overall 25-54 population) returned to cycle highs in June at 79.3% (matching February's level). Manufacturing led the way with an increase of 36,000 jobs, 12,000 of which were in autos.
