US service member killed in 'insider attack' in Afghanistan

A U.S. soldier was killed and two others wounded in an "apparent insider attack" in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, NATO said.

Resolute Support did not give details of the attack.

A statement issued by the Resolute Support Mission on Saturday said two other U.S. service members were wounded but in a stable condition. The militant group acknowledged the attack but did not claim responsibility.

A local police officer said a shooting took place at the airport in Tarinkot, the capital of Afghanistan's Uruzgan province, the AFP reported.

It was not immediately clear who carried out the attack, or whether they had been apprehended.

Maciel's honors include the Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Army Service Ribbon, the Columbus, Ga., newspaper site says.

"Cpl. Maciel was an excellent soldier beloved by his teammates and dedicated to our mission", Maciel's battalion commander, Lt. Col. David Conner, said in the 3rd Infantry Division statement. "Our prayers are with his family and friends during this hard time".

Since U.S. involvement in Afghanistan began in October 2001, 1,876 U.S. military personnel have been killed in action and 20,385 have been wounded in action, as of May 31. Efforts to impose a ceasefire in the region have been mostly unsuccessful. The specially trained unit's 800 members are meant to advise Afghan forces in small teams, embedding more closely with their Afghan partners than conventional units.

"And right now, you know, yes, green on blue could be a threat, but we have not had a single incident", Jackson said, using a military term for insider attacks.
