Stephen Lynch was confused with Louie Gohmert during Peter Strzok hearing

Former FBI agent Peter Strzok to lawmakers: Anti-Trump texts didn’t “impact any official action”

Strzok played major roles in investigations into both Hillary Clinton's private email server and potential coordination between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

However, House Republicans, capitalizing on the text messages in an effort to discredit Mueller's investigation, said they didn't believe Strzok.

The 2008 Republican presidential candidate has repeatedly challenged Mueller's appointment and claimed no collusion took place between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation, while personally attacking Mueller and any findings of his probe. "You need your medication", said Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman of New Jersey.

"This is an intolerable harassment of a witness!" shouted Rep. David Cicilline of Rhode Island.

Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX) even questioned Strzok's character.

"Mr. Gowdy, my understanding of why I was kicked off was that based on an understanding of those texts, and the perception that they might create-" Strzok said.

At one point, Strzok refused to answer questions, citing a directive by Federal Bureau of Investigation attorneys, leading the chairman to threaten him with contempt of Congress. "I think not", Goodlatte said.

Gowdy seized on one message that has received particular attention from right-wing media outlets, an August 8, 2016, text in which Strzok, discussing with Page the prospect of a Trump win, says, "No".

And yet some analysts couldn't help but notice a hint of irony in Republicans' argument that Strzok's personal views must have influenced his official duty, while they simultaneously conduct investigations into politicians they openly support or oppose. He said the text, written late at night and off-the-cuff, reflected his belief that the American public would not stomach such "horrible, disgusting behavior" by the Republican presidential candidate.

In a chaotic hearing that spanned 10 hours, he insisted he never allowed personal opinions to affect his work, though he did acknowledge being dismayed by Donald Trump's behavior during the campaign.

"I urge our chairmen to change course and to keep their promises to protect the integrity of the special counsel's investigation", Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) said in his opening statement Thursday.

He said Strzok's texts were "the flawless foil" for Republicans. "We'll stop it", Strzok responded.

The hearing immediately got off to a contentious start Thursday, with Republicans slamming Strzok and Democrats warning their colleagues not to interfere with Mueller's investigation.

"Now call upon the majority to release that transcript in full today", Nadler said.

For a brief moment, lawmakers floated the idea of Strzok having some company when he appears Thursday - as the committee offered Page a spot to testify at Thursday's hearing.

"Ex-FBI LAYER Lisa Page today defied a House of Representatives issued Subpoena to testify before Congress!"

"[Trump's] not ever going to become president, right?"

She will instead appear in a closed-door hearing on Friday, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte told Fox Business Network.

Last month, Rosenstein defended the pace of the document production in the joint hearing. "You had the angry Republicans who didn't make the case that bias tainted the [Robert Mueller] probe, the high-dudgeon Democrats who have contempt for the other side".
