The body of a Secret Service agent who died in Scotland during President Trump's overseas trip is being returned to the United States on Wednesday.

United States Secret Service Agent Nole Remagen suffered a stroke while on President Trump's recent trip to Europe for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit and his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

A spokesman for the Secret Service said: 'We are incredibly grateful for the emergency medical service providers and physicians in Scotland who are providing much needed critical care'.

"As the president said in his statement, 'our hearts are filled with sadness over the loss of a beloved and devoted Special Agent, husband, and father".

The Secret Service also thanked the British medics and emergency services who responded to the ill agent.

The first lady took to Twitter to express her "deepest condolences" to Remagen's family, noting that the Secret Service "work tirelessly & often behind the scenes to keep our family safe".

A GoFundMe account has been created for Remagen's family.

Agent Remagen, who Vice President Pence called "a courageous American", leaves behind his wife and two children.

The Secret Service said the agent's name was being withheld to respect the family's privacy and allow time to complete personnel and family notifications. That evening, as Trump was strolling around his Ayrshire golf course with business associates, a Greenpeace activist paraglided over a controlled airspace near the president with a yellow banner that said: "Trump Well Below Par #resist". He served in the agency for 19 years.

Trump has shown that he holds the men and women of the Secret Service in high regard.

CNN reported Remagen was working on National Security Adviser John Bolton's midnight protection shift at Trump's Turnberry golf resort in Scotland when coworkers found him unresponsive. Trump released a tribute to the special agent and the Secret Service, stating that "we are forever in their debt".

Remagen's LinkedIn profile doesn't offer much insight to his life, but highlighted his many years' worth of service to the Secret Service. Yesterday, he passed away, surrounded by family and fellow Secret Service agents.
