Facebook will create its own Internet satellite

Internet Satellite Launch

It was reported in the report that according to an application filed by Facebook under the name of Pointview LLC in front of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the project was created to provide broadband access efficiently to unserved and underserved areas across the globe.

Dubbed Athena, the satellite will deliver 10 times more data than competing internet satellites such as SpaceX's Starlink, and the filling shows that Athena's E-band system can go up to 10Gbps download and 30Gbps upload using millimetre-wave radio signals.

Echoing the footsteps of Elon Musk's Space X and Softbank-backed OneWeb, Facebook joins the bandwagon of the global players that refocused on increasing Internet accessibility through satellites in low Earth orbit.

Greenwald is best-known for publishing whistleblower Edward Snowden's revelations about the US National Security Agency. He was detained in London that December and put into house arrest, while continuing to fight his extradition to Sweden.

The inception of Athena amidst bells-and-whistles comes only after a week of Facebook's declaration to shut down its Aquila project - the drone initiative which aimed at providing Internet access.

Athena would likely be a part of Facebook's Internet.org program, which provides regions of the world that lack Internet access with an online connection. The secret project was spotted last May on a filing with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), though Facebook remained mum on the technology, until now.

That said, it's still interesting to see what Facebook plans, especially considering that its previous attempts at these sorts of services didn't work well. In 2017, the solar-powered drone successfully completed the second full-scale test flight. It will offer broadband service to "unserved and underserved" areas. Though there are no statements commenting on the commercial availability of the project, SpaceX has already launched model satellites into the trajectory. What they found is that Facebook intends to launch the satellite sometime in early 2019. The company aims to launch satellite early next year. Google has made giant strides with its Project Loon under which the internet connectivity is provided through balloons. Globalstar and Iridium are also a few other companies that have crashed out from pursuing similar projects due to similar challenges.
