Google Launches Free Wi-Fi Hotspot Network in Nigeria

Nigeria becomes the fifth country to benefit from Google Station which previously had rolled out in India, Indonesia, Thailand and Mexico.

"We are offering new solutions to improve and expand access in Nigeria and across Africa; these launches demonstrate our commitment to Africa through products built to help people in Africa to make the most of the Internet", concludes Ehimuan-Chiazor. According to Google, only 35 percent of Africans can today access the web compared to 48 percent in Asia, 67 in Latin America, 85 in Europe and 95 in North America. These hotspots give the public a place to connect to high-speed Internet, which is lacking for many individuals in the countries Google is targeting.

These WiFi spots will include sites like markets, transport hubs, shopping malls, universities and more.

Osinbajo said: "Next week I will launch a climate innovation centre in partnership with the Enterprise Development Centre at the Lagos Business School, here in Lekki Village".

Ehimuan-Chiazor added that by the end of 2019, the free Wi-Fi service would have been launched in 200 locations in five cities across Nigeria.

Under the new law victims will also be able to request flexible working arrangements. A similar measure was adopted by the Philippines in 2004.

In March, Google launched a job search experience in Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa and this week, the tech giant announced expanding it to another 32 countries in Africa.

Last year, Google announced plans to train 10 million Africans in online skills within five years. A trio of base stations at Stellenbosch University in Cape Town will supply ten nearby primary and secondary schools with internet access to prove that white space access can work without affecting TV signals. Now it looks like Google has their sights set on Africa with Google Station.

Google top officials who were present at the event unveiled a collection of new applications that will be made available in the coming days for smartphone users.

Google is also making search more powerful for ordinary Africans.

"... But the most profound implication is that internet access is becoming available to some of the poorest in society".
