Federal judge blocks release of 3D-printed gun plans

Ferguson Sues to Stop Spread of 3D-printed Gun Design Plans

Defense Distributed, the company making the blueprints available online, filed its own suit in Texas on Sunday, asserting that it is the victim of an "ideologically fueled program of intimidation and harassment" that violates the company's First Amendment rights. In June, the State Department reversed a past decision and allowed it to be posted online by Texas-based group.

On top of the lawsuit, 21 state attorneys general - including Rosenblum - sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, urging them to withdraw from the settlement with Defense Distributed.

He added that it didn't "seem to make much sense!".

Blueprints for 3D-printed guns, published online four days early amid last-minute attempts to ban them, have been downloaded thousands of times.

The lawsuit states that "Defense Distributed has sought to bypass these established legal requirements to instantaneously deliver real, operational firearms to any Pennsylvanian with an internet connection and a 3D printer". "I stand ready to help support your administration in efforts to bolster our national security".

"These files have been informally available for a couple of years now and anybody who really, really wanted them would surely have found them already", he said. Because only a single component of a gun is generally regulated - the so-called "lower receiver" that contains the trigger and magazine well - people can just 3D print that one piece out of plastic and buy the other strong metal parts on the internet. "Federal law requires rational decision making, the Trump administration doesn't do that", Ferguson said.

"These risky files would allow anyone - including terrorists, domestic abusers, felons, fugitives, and juveniles - to print untraceable assault weapons using a 3D printer from the comfort of their own homes", said Attorney General Grewal.

Eight states and the District of Columbia have already sued the Trump administration over the issue.

The NRA said in a statement that "anti-gun politicians" and some members of the news media had been wrongly claiming 3D printing technology would "allow for the production and widespread proliferation of undetectable plastic firearms".

Defending the weapons, she said: 'I'm actually talking about what Democrats call, quote unquote, "ghost guns" and the what the rest of us call freedom and innovation: 3-D printed guns'.

"I am looking into 3D Plastic Guns being sold to the public", the president said.

"The age of the downloadable gun begins", Defense Distributed stated on its site after its settlement with the State Department.

On Sunday, Attorney General Shapiro, Governor Wolf, and the State Police sued in U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Pennsylvania, to block the company from distributing its 3D gun designs in Pennsylvania.

Durkan said expanding access to 3D guns would only benefit criminals and people who shouldn't have access to firearms.

In the meantime, the company agreed to block sales to users with IP addresses from Los Angeles, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. "Now anyone with a 3D printer in their living room can have a gun", Avery Gardiner, co-president of the Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence, says.

"My biggest fear is that innocent people will believe it's fine to download the data for a gun, take it out for target shooting, and then they or someone else is injured inadvertently", he said.
