Three dead as army open fire on Zimbabwe election protests

The first elections without Robert Mugabe marks an historic moment for the country

Parliamentary results early on Wednesday showed Mr Mnangagwa's Zanu PF party cruising to a big majority after picking up 109 seats against 41 for the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

Opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) official Tendai Biti said on Tuesday that the party was sure Chamisa had won and that if he was not declared victorious, it would "announce our own results".

Zimbabwe's opposition party has declared that their presidential candidate Nelson Chamisa won yesterday's election, despite no official results being released.

Opposition supporters clogged the streets of Zimbabwe's capital Wednesday as the country awaited the results of the first leadership election since the end of Robert Mugabe's strongman rule past year.

The security forces opened fire with guns, water cannons and tear gas, and protesters burned cars and threw rocks as helicopters hovered above Harare.

A ZwNews corresponded has witnessed armed soldiers firing live ammunition, beating up people in the streets of Harare as military tanks head into the town centre from Msasa area.

Truckloads of anti-riot officers were called in to help clear the streets as tensions escalated.

The MDC Alliance says the ruling Zanu-PF party has rigged Monday's presidential and parliamentary vote.

State broadcaster ZBC had reported that the electoral commission would announce the presidential results at 12:30 local time (10:30 GMT), but only parliamentary results were read out.

Separately, European Union election observers released a report noting "soft intimidation" and an "unlevel playing field" during the leadup to Monday's historic vote - the first since the ousting of long-time leader Robert Mugabe. "This time we will not allow it, we will fight", said a protester who wore a red MDC beret in central Harare.

"The longer it lasts that the results of the presidential election is not known, the more lack of credibility it provides", Brok said.

"We hold the opposition MDC Alliance and its whole leadership responsible for this disturbance of national peace", he said, adding the government "went out of its way" to try to ensure the elections were peaceful.

It could take up to five days for the final election results to be released, which means they could be released on Saturday, August 4.

Observers had raised concerns about the independence of the electoral commission ahead of the vote, pointing to close ties to the ruling party and the military.

Another member of the opposition, Eveson Matambanadzo, said: "The results we have are cooked if you compare the people who voted on the ground to the results that are there it doesn't tally." .

The EU mission has criticised the delay in announcing the presidential results.

Chamisa has said he is confident of victory, and has threatened in the lead-up to the polls he will not to accept a Zanu-PF victory.

It followed a surprise press conference at his home on Sunday at which he stunned observers and called for voters to reject ZANU-PF, his former party.
