France bans smartphones and tablets use in schools.

French president Emmanuel Macron had promised to institute stricter legislation of this nature while running for office previous year, with a Parliament vote of 62 to 1 finally supporting the campaign pledge, although a number of elected political opponents chose to abstain from formally expressing their opinion.

French newspaper Le Monde reported that these devices will only be allowed for educational purposes or for students with a disability.

The law was passed through Parliament on Monday, July 30, by 62 votes to one.

Students in France will have to leave their cell phones at home as they head back to school.

Smoking ban to go in effect for public housing July 31

One study by the London School of Economics found that after phones were banned, students' performance in exams significantly increased and "restricting mobile phone use can be a low-priced policy to reduce educational inequalities".

Schools may make exceptions for use in teaching, extra-curricular activities, or for disabled pupils.

However, this isn't the first time the French government is making a law to limit the use of smartphones. This new law isn't really a stretch, since students already couldn't use phones in class.

New York City had a cellphone ban for students in the area - a policy which Mayor de Blasio lifted in 2015.

The law is France's bid in the fight against children's smartphone addiction.

French telecoms regulator ARCEP claims that over 90% of French children between the ages of 12 and 17 had mobile phones in 2016, up from 72% in 2005. All in all, it'll likely be many years before researchers can gather enough data to report on the effectiveness of the new French law.
