Powerful quake rocks Indonesia's Lombok island, 82 dead

A foreign tourist is given assistance as people arrive from nearby Gili Trawangan island as Indonesia continue to evacuate tourists at the port at Bangsal in northern Lombok

The death toll from a magnitude 7.0 quake to hit Indonesia's tourist island of Lombok has risen to 82 with thousands of people evacuated, disaster officials say.

The 32-year-old model said she was holding baby Miles, who is almost three months old, when the quake struck and was forced to wander outside completely nude.

Officials initially reported that at least three people had been killed.

A spokesman for Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency told the AFP news agency that many buildings had been affected in Lombok's main city of Mataram, majority built with weak construction materials.

The quake, which struck at a depth of 15km off the north coast of Lombok on Sunday, comes a week after a magnitude 6.4 quake killed 14 people on the island and prompted a large-scale evacuation of a volcano popular with hikers. The natural disaster was felt in Mataram (the capital of West Nusa Tenggara province) and Bima, and lesser shakes were felt in Denpasar, Kuta, Karangasam (in Bali) and in parts of East Java.

The magnitude seven tremor struck just 10km underground on Sunday evening local time, with the violent shakes felt as far away as Denpasar. As we got to the hotel - people were running out.

The powerful quake triggered panic among tourists and residents, and was also felt on the neighbouring holiday island of Bali.

The Bali and Lombok airports continued operating Sunday night, according to the director general of civil aviation. A 6.4-magnitude natural disaster shook the island July 29, killing more than a dozen people and briefly stranding hundreds of hikers on the slopes of a volcano.

There are reports that one Australian man's house was destroyed in Senggigi in northwest Lombok after it collapsed, but that the man, his wife and son were safe having previously fled up a mountain to wait out tsunami warnings. Hotels and other buildings in both locations are not allowed to exceed the height of coconut trees.

The island nation is also situated in the Ring of Fire, an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean where many earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. In December of 2004, the Boxing Day quake and ensuing tsunami killed 230,000 people across more than 10 countries.
