Facebook wants your financial data to expand Messenger, says report

Facebook without irony asks banks to give up your financial info

Facebook has asked major USA banks to share customer data to allow it to develop new services on the social network's Messenger texting platform, a banking source told AFP on Monday. Facebook tried to persuade banks to give it their users' data by promising them features such as users being able to see their checking account balances or receiving fraud alerts within Facebook Messenger. Unless Facebook is able to reassure the banks that it either won't have direct access to the data itself, or that the data will never be used for advertising purposes, then the company may not succeed in convincing USA banks to share their customers data. The information would be used to offer new services to Facebook account holders. However, one large bank has already pulled out of the partnership talks due to these privacy concerns, according to the WSJ.

Facebook acknowledged last month that it was facing multiple inquiries from U.S. and British regulators about a scandal involving the now bankrupt British consultancy Cambridge Analytica.

Chase isn't "sharing our customers' off-platform transaction data with these platforms, and have had to say no to some things as a result", said JPMorgan Chase's spokeswoman Patricia Wexler, referring CNET to her statement to the Journal.

Highlighting the fact that "Facebook has been a cesspool of privacy issues for quite a while", technology writer Curtis Silver argued in a piece for Forbes on Monday that it's time to "quit Facebook before it inevitably accesses your banking data".

Iran acquires commercial aircraft ahead of United States sanctions
In August and November Iran faces two new waves of sanctions that will shut off their access to U.S. banking and oil exports. The country's isolation from global markets and the worldwide community was imposed following the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Wells Fargo decline to address the news. Per the WSJ's reporting, Facebook also asked for additional data, like where customers are spending their money outside of the social network.

"Like many online companies with commerce businesses, we partner with banks and credit card companies to offer services like customer chat or account management", Facebook said.

From Facebook's perspective, the company believes that more customer information means more targeted efforts at engaging its user base. A critical part of these partnerships is keeping people's information safe and secure.
