The Facts of Life Star Charlotte Rae Dead at 92

Charlotte Rae

Actress Charlotte Rae, who played the kindly maternal surrogate Mrs. Garrett on two hit '80s sitcoms, has died at age 92, according to several press reports.

Rae said she enjoyed how TV viewers embraced her character on "Diff'rent Strokes" and "The Facts of Life". 7 years earlier, she had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Her character's popularity resulted in her being the link to a spinoff, The Facts of Life, which saw Mrs. Garrett moving on to be the housemother and dietitian for a fictional all-girls school.

While Rae was best known for her work on the small screen, she also managed to score two Tony noms for parts she played on Broadway.

As well as starring in Diff'rent Strokes and Facts of Life, she more recently had guest spots on TV shows including The King of Queens, Pretty Little Liars, Sisters, and ER. "So now. I have to make up my mind". Even while appearing on The Facts of Life, she also appeared on The Love Boat, playing three different roles in four episodes between 1982 and 1985.

"It's with a heavy heart & tears (but a smile as I think of her) that I now move through the world without this incredible force of a woman being it". That same year she released her autobiography "The Facts of My Life", co-written by her son Larry Strauss.

She previously battled pancreatic cancer in private, telling the outlet that the public was unaware she was undergoing chemotherapy until she announced her recovery.

In 1961 she became a semi-regular on the New York-based cop sitcom "Car 54, Where Are You?" as the wife of the NYPD officer played by future "Munsters" grandpa Al Lewis.

In 2015, Rae published the well-reviewed memoir "The Facts of My Life", which shed light on her marital issues with composer John Strauss, who she divorced in 1976, and her stuggles with alcohol.
