"Totally Legal": Trump Admits His Son Met Russian Lawyer In Election Year

President Trump slams media as 'dangerous' and 'sick,' denies he is concerned about Donald Jr.'s meeting with Russians

The June 2016 Trump Tower meeting was held between Donald Trump Jr, Jared Kushner, then-Campaign Manager Paul Manafort, Natalia Veselnitskaya (a Russian lawyer and self-described informant), and Russian operatives.

That new admission, however, is completely at odds with the statement Trump crafted for use in the July 2017 news story that first reported the Trump Tower meeting.

Trump caused a major media uproar over the last few days, not only because he admitted Donald Trump Jr. took the meeting to get dirt on his political opponents, but also because the two repeatedly denied that the meeting was held for that goal.

He concludes the tweet by saying, "I did not know about it!"

Emails arranging the meeting showed that Rob Goldstone, a former music publicist with ties to both Trump and Moscow, told Trump Jr. he had "official documents and information that would implicate Hillary [Clinton] and her dealings with Russian Federation and would be very useful to your father", which was "part of Russian Federation and its government's support for Mr. Trump".

While Donald Trump Jr. has yet to be interviewed by the Special Counsel's office, many legal scholars do believe that he may have broken several laws in his drive to seemingly obtain damaging material on his father's opponent Hillary Clinton, which had been stolen by a hostile foreign power. Trump's legal team defended the statement as "short but accurate" in a letter sent to Mueller in January, as quoted in the New York Times.

Trump railed again Sunday about Mueller's probe, calling it "the most one sided Witch Hunt in the history of our country".

Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating USA intelligence findings that Russians conspired to sway the election in Mr Trump's favour.

Last year, shortly after Donald Trump Jr. released an email thread arranging the meeting, the president said it was a meeting "in order to get info on an opponent" and said there was nothing unusual about it.

Trump, his son, his lawyers and other administration officials have repeatedly said Trump did not know about the now infamous meeting, until news of it broke in July 2017.

"I don't represent Don Jr.", Sekulow said, "but I will tell you I have no knowledge at all of Don Jr. being told that he's a target of any investigation, and I have no knowledge of him being interviewed by the special counsel".

That initial statement said the meeting "primarily" involved a discussion of an obscure law governing American adoptions of Russians - not opposition research on Hillary Clinton. "When you look at a meeting, George, that took place ... now two years ago, the question is, 'What law, statute or rule or regulation's been violated?' Nobody's pointed to one". Any legal battle over whether the president can be compelled to testify could go all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, the lawyer, Jay Sekulow, said on ABC's "This Week". They purposely cause great division & distrust.

These are all significant developments in Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe into whether the Trump campaign conspired with the Russian government.

Trump might as well have just confirmed The Post's report that he is anxious about what the meeting portends for his son.
