Manafort's right-hand man testifies against him in tax fraud case

Rick Gates testified Monday that he knowingly committed crimes along with former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort.

In cross-examining Liss, one of Manafort's lawyers, Thomas Zehnle, argued that Manafort was required to file FBARs for his companies only if he owned more than 50 percent of them. Downing asked Gates, who also worked on Republican candidate Donald Trump's campaign.

Gates also described to jurors how he repeatedly submitted fake financial documents at Manafort's behest as his former boss became concerned he was paying too much in taxes and, later, that his funds were drying up.

Manafort, facing charges of bank and tax fraud related to his work in Ukraine, has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

While the case has nothing to do with either man's work on the Trump campaign and the charges mostly pre-date that time, the USA president has shown interest in proceedings. Gates says he didn't report the money as income. They have several times tried to impugn his credibility before the jury.

"You committed fraud with Mr". Manafort has pleaded not guilty.

Mueller's team hopes Gates' testimony will lead to the conviction of Manafort for a list of financial charges conducted long before he joined the Trump campaign.

Gates, who pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and conspiracy in February, was originally charged as a co-conspirator in the case.

In questioning Laporta on Monday, a prosecutor asked the accountant about a $US10 million loan purportedly received by Manafort from Russian businessman Oleg Deripaska in 2006. He testified that at Manafort's instruction, he lied to Manafort's accountants about foreign bank accounts in order to avoid paying taxes on that money.

A former Justice Department attorney with experience prosecuting similar cases told Roll Call that the prosecution will most likely call another summary witness toward the trial's conclusion to testify about evidence that shows Manafort opened more than 30 accounts in four different countries under his name, including shell companies that sent Manafort and Gates the money that they classified as "loans".

The hugely anticipated courtroom showdown brought Gates face-to-face with his longtime business associate and fellow Trump campaign aide.

"Not happy. I just saw this".

Rick Gates admits he did commit crimes with Paul Manafort, while testifying for the prosecution. "Yes, we did", he replied.

The jury has heard how Manafort made tens of millions of dollars for political work with pro-Russian politicians in Ukraine. In exchange for his plea, Gates agreed to testify against Manafort.

The warning came after multiple reporters rushed out of the courtroom at the same time Monday after it was announced that Gates would testify Monday.

"A lot of these loan agreements are backdated", Gates said. Manafort's political activities were not limited to the U.S.by any means: government prosecutors are alleging that he evaded taxes on $15 million worth of income earned while promoting former Ukrainian President Viktor F. Yanukovych.

But she said she believed Manafort was directing Gates' efforts to disguise loans and hide income, noting that Manafort was copied on her email traffic with Gates. In court filings, Mueller has accused Kilimnik of having ties to Russian intelligence services, an allegation he has denied.
