Death Toll Rises to 131 in Indonesian Quake

Debris of a mosque

CBS2's Ben Tracy reports.

Trevor Deaker and his partner Mark Borrie were on holiday on the island of Gili Trawangan, just northwest of Lombok, when the quake struck.

Some Australians are still stranded on the Gili Islands off Lombok's nothern coast, the scene of a mass evacuation. Indonesian authorities said Monday that rescuers still haven't reached some devastated parts of the tourist island of Lombok after a powerful natural disaster flattened houses and toppled bridges, killing a number of people and shaking neighboring Bali.

Volunteers and rescue personnel were erecting more temporary shelters for the over 80,000 people left homeless on Lombok by the magnitude 7.0 quake on Sunday evening.

A mother bath her daughter in a bucket after their home in Sembalun Bumbung was destroyed by the Lombok quake.

Among the destroyed structures is the Jabal Nur mosque in Lading-Lading, where soldiers pulled out a man from a space under the mosque's flattened roof.

"Without the businesses open and repaired there will be limited tourists therefore the impact on locals and the island itself is unthinkable".

The agency said the figure was expected to rise. All but two of were killed on Lombok; the others died on Bali.

Many frightened, displaced villagers are staying under tents or tarpaulins dotted along roads or in parched rice fields, and makeshift medical facilities have been set up to treat the injured.

"We've had a lot of really big quakes in that area", said Caruso, referring to the Indonesian region. "The customers managed to escape, but he himself didn't", Sahril said. The epicenters of both earthquakes were only a few miles apart.

The island is popular with tourists and now about 1,000 foreign visitors have been evacuated to nearby islands.

The natural disaster was also felt in neighboring Bali, another popular tourist spot.

Mr Supartana said two people had been found alive, along with three bodies. The warning was lifted after only small waves were recorded.

"We will tear down our houses, they are too damaged to fix, we will rebuild with plywood and timber, it is safer, cheaper and warmer". "Many of us screamed hysterically".

"Of course they are all sad", he said through a translator. "We hope the victims will have some help and relief over there right away".

Thousands of tourists have left Lombok since Sunday, fearing further earthquakes, some on extra flights added by airlines and others on ferries to Bali.

"It was quite frantic cos some of the locals were literally jumping on to the boats", British tourist James Kelsall said. Nugroho said authorities had deployed three ships to evacuate people who were packed on the 16-square-kilometre beach.

The island was further rattled by a magnitude 5.2 quake.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire and is regularly hit by earthquakes.

Facebook quickly apologized for the mishap, noting that the feature is "widely available" on the site globally, but expressed regret "that it appeared in this unfortunate context".

"Mate, we were knocked certainly to the floor". "Shaking. Parts of the building crumbling. But people out in the villages or elsewhere haven't been so lucky, unfortunately".
