Indonesia Earthquake Death Toll Rises To 164, At Least 1400 Injured

Death toll jumps to 347 in 6.9 Indonesia earthquake – report

The footage of the prayer led by Imam Arafat at the Musholla As-Syuhada Mosque was being broadcast live on Facebook on Sunday night when a magnitude 7.0 natural disaster hit the neighboring Lombok Island.

Indonesia's geological agency said the quake Thursday afternoon had a magnitude of 6.2 and was shallow, at a depth of 12 kilometers, centred in the northwest of the island. That number is expected to rise.

Officials said about three-quarters of Lombok's rural north had been without electricity since Sunday, although power had since been restored in most areas.

This morning the island suffered a strong 6.2 tremor that was felt in neighbouring Bali, Reuters reports.

The governor of the province that includes Lombok where the quake was centered, the military, the national search and rescue agency and regent of North Lombok issued different death tolls that ranged from 226 to 381.

Indonesian disaster relief authorities are trying to find food, potable water, and medical care for the 1,477 people severely injured and the 156,000 forced to evacuate their homes due to the disaster.

It said it didn't have the potential to cause a tsunami.

Cleanup and rescue efforts are still continuing on the island, following the previous quakes.

Some evacuees have complained of being ignored or experiencing long delays for supplies to arrive at shelters.

"We have no clean water, so if we want to go to the toilet we use a small river nearby", he said, adding they needed food, bedding and medicine.

The Indonesian Red Cross said it had set up 10 mobile clinics in the north of the island.

Aid groups say children are particularly vulnerable, with many sleeping in open fields and suffering illnesses from lack of warm clothing and blankets. "I do hope the government can help", she said.
