United Kingdom ‘to ask Russian Federation to give up poisoning suspects’

Police officers stand on duty outside Sergei Skripal's home in Salisbury Britain

The request seems certain to be rejected by Russian Federation, and could further inflame the diplomatic row between the two companies.

The UK is poised to ask Russian Federation to extradite suspects over the nerve agent poisoning in Salisbury, according to reports.

They say the Crown Prosecution has prepared an extradition request and it is ready to file, according to sources from Whitehall.

According to the publication, the request for extradition has already been prepared and is going to be sent to Russian authorities in the nearest future.

Both are suspected of poisoning Sergei Skripal, a former double agent, and his daughter, Yulia, on March 4 with Novichok, a military-grade nerve agent developed by the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

The report comes after it was revealed last month that investigators believed they had identified the suspected perpetrators of the attack and were sure they were Russian.

Charlie Rowley and Dawn Sturgess were subsequently treated for exposure to the nerve agent.

A CPS spokeswoman told Metro it was aware of the Guardian's report but had no comment to make.

"This is Litvinenko all over again".

In 2007, after Russian ex-spy Alexander Litvinenko was murdered with polonium in London, Moscow refused Britain's request to extradite two Russian suspects in the case. The diplomatic dispute escalated shortly after the Skipals' poisoning, with Britain and its allies expelling more than a hundred Russian diplomats in protest. She died eight days later, but he has since been released from hospital.

United Kingdom intelligence chiefs blamed Russian Federation for the attack, but Moscow denies all responsibility.

Mr Rowley, like the Skripals, recovered from the attack but Ms Sturgess, his partner, died. British police believe the Novichok attacks were carried out using perfume bottle sprays or smears placed directly on their doorknobs and other surfaces.
