US Will Sanction Russia After UK Nerve Agent Attack

DS
PUNISHMENT Trump's administration will slap Russia with a new round of sanctions

WASHINGTON-The U.S. announced new sanctions against Russia on Wednesday over the nerve agent attack against a former Russian spy and his daughter in the U.K.in March, saying Moscow violated an global ban on chemical and biological weapons.

"Following a 15-day Congressional notification period, these sanctions will take effect upon publication of a notice in the Federal Register, expected on or around August 22, 2018", the department continued.

Sergei Skripal, a 66-year-old former colonel in Russian military intelligence who has lived in Britain since a 2010 spy exchange, and his 33-year-old daughter, Yulia, were poisoned in the English city of Salisbury and were critically ill for weeks.

A release from the State Department said that such determination had now been made by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo over the attack this spring in Salisbury, England - following a British government conclusion that the administration had said months ago it accepted. "The UK welcomes this further action by our U.S. allies", a spokesman for the UK Foreign Office said in a statement.

The novichok-type nerve agent was found on the front door of Skripal's home.

Pushed to take action by the Republican lawmaker who chairs the House's Foreign Affairs Committee, the Trump administration moved on Wednesday to take delayed action.

"The mandatory sanctions that follow this determination are key to increasing pressure on Russian Federation".

"Vladimir Putin must know that we will not tolerate his deadly acts, or his ongoing attacks on our democratic process", Royce said.

The new USA sanctions come amid increasing frustration with Trump's handling of Russian Federation, and how he apparently needed congressional prodding to impose the new penalties. His administration has sanctioned a number of Russian officials and oligarchs for human rights abuses and election meddling.

But unless Russia agrees within 90 days to stop all use of chemical weapons and permit inspections to confirm their elimination, additionally mandated measures could cut off nearly all trade between the two countries, prohibit landing rights for Russian airlines, and lead to a suspension of diplomatic relations. The U.S. said at the time it was the largest expulsion of Russian spies in American history. The official briefed reporters under a State Department-imposed condition of anonymity.
