Hurricane heads to Hawaii as lava activity wanes

Depending on its ultimate track, the storm could bring thunderstorms, gusty winds and increased surf to parts of the island and could also cause unsafe rip currents off the east- and south-facing beaches.

Early morning GOES-16 one-minute satellite imagery confirms that the small circulation of Ileana has dissipated within the northern portion of Hurricane John's larger circulation.

Hurricane Hector remains a category four storm as it slowly moves west towards the south of Hawaii.

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Big Island interior, summits, north, east and south, including Kohala and Kona.

Closer to shore was Ileana, which was centered about 305 miles (495 kilometers) southeast of Manzanillo.

Sub-tropical Storm Debby was heading north at 15mph on Tuesday evening, with maximum force winds of 40mph, but it is expected to dissipate before the week is out.

The National Weather Service says Hector is expected to pass roughly 150 miles south of the Big Island on Wednesday.

Farther out to sea, a strengthening Hurricane Hector headed for the central Pacific as a Category 4 storm, with winds of 140 miles per hour (220 kph), the Center Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu reported.
