The death toll for the earthquakes is believed to have topped 300, with the latest 5.8 magnitude quake further damaging buildings and causing panic.

Scientists say the powerful Indonesian quake that killed almost 400 people lifted the island it struck by as much as 25 centimetres (10 inches).

However, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, the spokesman for the national disaster agency, said the number of deaths will increase.

Indonesia is prone to earthquakes because it lies on the Ring of Fire - the line of frequent quakes and volcanic eruptions that circles virtually the entire Pacific rim.
