Senate Judiciary announces Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing

Kavanaugh could be President Donald Trump's second addition to the high court, following Justice Neil Gorsuch.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) said Friday the confirmation hearing for Judge Brett Kavanaugh to succeed Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court will begin Tuesday, September 4.

Kavanaugh was nominated 57 days before the announcement about a hearing date was made Friday afternoon. "He's a mainstream judge. He has a record of judicial independence and applying the law as it is written", Grassley said.

In 2016, Senate Republicans refused to hold confirmation hearings for President Barack Obama's nominee to the Supreme Court, Merrick Garland, believing that the Supreme Court vacancy occurred too close to the election. Opening statements will take place on September 4, and the Senators will begin questioning Kavanaugh the following day. "This is outrageous. No one will be able to look at his full record before the hearing - not me, not you, not anyone".

Kavanaugh needs just 50 votes to be confirmed.

The top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, Sen.

When Justice Elena Kagan was nominated for the Supreme Court, she had also served as a counsel in a presidential administration, and accordingly, the Senate Judiciary Committee paused for almost a month to review the documents related to her service as counsel in the Clinton and Obama Administrations, releasing over 170,000 pages of information, including every email Justice Kagan wrote while serving in the White House. "The committee also expects to receive hundreds of thousands of additional pages of Executive Branch documents", the Judiciary Committee released. His confirmation will require a simple majority in the 100-seat Senate, where Republicans hold a 51-49 edge over Democrats and independents.

Schumer and Feinstein announced last week they plan to meet with Kavanaugh after the Senate returns from its shortened recess on August 15, and urge him to ask the National Archives and President George W. Bush to support the release of "all of his files" from his time spent working in the Bush White House. Democrats have complained Republicans are rushing the process for the lifetime appointment without proper vetting of Kavanaugh's record.

Kavanaugh has amassed a solidly conservative judicial record as an appeals court judge for 12 years.

[I] t appears that senators belonging to the majority party are using outside channels to secure preferential access to records and to determine which documents will be released, and therefore have undue influence over both the Senate's and the public's perceptions of the nominee. The process, he said, has been "open, transparent and fair".
