Vostok-2018: China joins Russian Federation in biggest ever war games

300K Russian troops to participate in largest military exercises in decades report

The week-long exercise, known as Vostok-2018 (East-2018) "have kicked off" in far eastern Russian Federation, the defence ministry said on Tuesday.

"With its Vostok-2018 exercise, Russia sends a message that it regards the U.S. as a potential enemy and China as a potential ally", wrote Dmitri Trenin, a former Russian army colonel and director of the Carnegie Moscow Center think tank.

Dozens of helicopters and planes also took to the skies and ships moved into position off the coast.

The start of the exercises coincided with a bilateral meeting between President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart President Xi Jinping at a forum in Valdivostok, where they vowed to fight attacks on their economies.

Chinese President Xi for his part said the two countries' "friendship is getting stronger all the time".

Mongolia also has sent a military contingent.

But according to Keir Giles, a Russian military expert at the UK-based Chatham House think-tank, the overall aim of the drill is to "prepare Russia for armed conflict with the West".

Russian Federation has said it is showcasing methods developed during its military intervention in Syria, giving Chinese forces - which haven't fought in a war since 1979 - a glimpse of real combat skills.

"It will be unprecedented in terms of geographic scope and the strength of command and control centers and forces due to participate", defence minister Shoigu said.

"Imagine 36,000 military vehicles moving at the same time: tanks, armored personnel carriers, infantry fighting vehicles - and all of this, of course, in conditions as close to a combat situation as possible", Shoigu said, according to Agence France-Presse.

Injured in Paris Knife Attack; Terrorism Not Suspected
The Foreign Office said: 'We are urgently investigating this incident and are in close contact with the French authorities'. Police continued searching for clues at the site of a knife attack in Paris that left seven people injured.

The most intense exercises will be held in the Tsugol range, about 90 miles from the Chinese and Mongolian borders.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation has denounced the exercises as a rehearsal for a "large-scale military conflict".

NATO Spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said that the training "fits into a pattern we have seen over some time: a more assertive Russian Federation, significantly increasing its defense budget and its military presence".

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the drills were taking place in light of the "aggressive and unfriendly" attitudes toward Russian Federation, according to the BBC.

"These are very important drills but they are part of routine annual work to develop the armed forces", he told reporters Tuesday.

Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov argued the exercises were "justified" in "the current worldwide situation" given "aggressive and unfriendly" attitudes towards Russian Federation.

Relations between Russian Federation and the West declined sharply in 2014 with Moscow's annexation of Crimea and the outbreak of a Kremlin-backed uprising in eastern Ukraine.

Since then Moscow has increased the number of its large-scale military exercises in the Caucasus, the Baltic and the Arctic.

Russian Federation also staged a major naval exercise in the eastern Mediterranean this month and its jets resumed bombing the Syrian region of Idlib, the last major enclave of rebels fighting its ally President Bashar al-Assad.

The country's war games in Eastern Europe previous year, Zapad-2017, saw 12,700 troops take part, according to Moscow.
